Universal Premier Resorts vs Value Resorts: The Math Most Families Miss

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear when planning Universal Orlando vacations is:

"Those Universal Premier Resorts are way too expensive."

And honestly, at first glance, I understand why people think that.

When comparing room rates, resorts like Sapphire Falls, Aventura, Cabana Bay, Stella Nova, Terra Luna, and Endless Summer can look like a much better deal. Their nightly rates are often significantly lower than Universal's Premier Resorts, making them an attractive option for families trying to stay within budget.

But here's what many families don't realize.

Universal's Premier Resorts—Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel—include Unlimited Express Passes for every registered guest staying in the room for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

If you've never priced Express Passes before, the cost can be surprising. Depending on the time of year, Unlimited Express Passes can cost hundreds of dollars per person, per day when purchased separately.

For a family of four, those costs can add up quickly.

That's why I always encourage my clients to look at the total vacation cost—not just the room rate.

Comparing the Real Cost

Many guests see a Premier Resort rate and immediately rule it out.

However, once you factor in the value of the included Unlimited Express Passes, the numbers can tell a very different story.

In some cases, a family staying at a less expensive resort and purchasing Express Passes separately may spend as much—or even more—than they would have by staying at a Premier Resort in the first place.

This is especially important during busy travel periods like:

  • February Vacation

  • Spring Break

  • Thanksgiving Week

  • Christmas and New Year's

  • Fourth of July

Not only can Express Pass prices increase during these periods, but availability can become limited as well.

Does That Mean Everyone Should Stay at a Premier Resort?

Not at all.

I regularly recommend resorts like:

  • Sapphire Falls

  • Cabana Bay Beach Resort

  • Aventura Hotel

  • Stella Nova Resort

  • Terra Luna Resort

  • Endless Summer Resorts

They're fantastic properties and often the right choice depending on a family's travel style, budget, and priorities.

The key is understanding the trade-offs before you book.

For some families, saving on the room makes perfect sense.

For others, the convenience of being close to the parks and having Unlimited Express Passes included provides significantly more value.

The Best Resort Isn't Always the Cheapest One

When helping clients plan Universal Orlando vacations, I don't just compare room rates.

I compare:

  • Travel dates

  • Family size

  • Park plans

  • Express Pass needs

  • Overall vacation budget

The goal isn't to find the cheapest resort.

The goal is to find the resort that provides the best overall value for your family's vacation.

If Universal Orlando is on your family's wish list for 2027, I'd love to help you compare the options and determine which resort makes the most sense for your family.

Schedule a complimentary consultation and let's start planning your Universal Orlando vacation.
